Membership at Crown Sydney Is Not What Most People Expect
Crown Sydney runs on a strict members-only set-up, and it catches a lot of visitors by surprise. You cannot just wander straight onto the gaming floor; you must have an active Crown Rewards membership in place first. The upside is that the membership itself is free. No annual fee, no subscription, nothing recurring in the background.
What does matter is the way you obtain it. The whole thing is tied to you being there in person. You can get the ball rolling through the Crown Resorts App before you leave home, but the final confirmation always takes place face-to-face at the Crown Rewards Desk on Level 2 at Crown Sydney, 1 Barangaroo Avenue, Barangaroo NSW 2000. There is no way around that last step.
Digital ID is not accepted. Full stop. To finalise your membership you must show a physical, government-issued photo ID, and that requirement stands no matter how much of the process you have already completed in the app.
Once your membership is confirmed at the desk, your Crown Rewards Membership Card is printed and handed to you on the spot. From that point on, that card is essentially your key to get onto the casino floor on every future visit.
What to Bring Before You Go
From our experience, it is much easier to prepare all this the night before instead of scrolling through your phone in the car park. Have these ready:
- A valid physical photo ID - Australian passport, driver’s licence, or an equivalent government-issued document
- Your current Australian mobile number and an active email address
- Your own bank account details if you intend to open a Deposit Account on the same visit
- The Crown Resorts App already installed, with your membership application started if you want to cut down time at the desk
- A clear understanding that digital driver’s licences on your phone will not be accepted at any stage
That last point causes more problems than you would expect. Even in states where the digital licence app is widely used, Crown Sydney still will not accept it in place of a plastic card.
Getting Your Crown Rewards Account Set Up
The app-based pre-registration is genuinely handy if you like to plan ahead. It does not replace the in-person step, but it usually trims down how long you stand at the desk having details entered.
To get started, download the Crown Resorts App from the App Store or Google Play, then open it and look for the option to join Crown Rewards. Follow the prompts to enter your full legal name, date of birth, contact details, and your residential address.
You then review the membership terms that appear in the app and accept them if you are comfortable. Before you close the app, either save your progress properly or make a quick note of your application reference so you can quote it later if needed.
After that, you need to go to Crown Sydney during the opening hours of the Crown Rewards Desk and head straight up to Level 2. Present your physical ID to the staff member on duty; they will check your identity, link it to your application, and then activate your membership in the system.
Once they are done, your membership card is produced and you are set to go. When you have already completed the app side of things, the interaction at the desk tends to be noticeably shorter and a bit more straightforward.
Casino Operating Hours
One important detail to keep in mind when you are planning a trip: the casino floor and the Crown Rewards Desk do not always follow an identical timetable. Desk hours are listed separately on crownsydney.com.au, so you should check those specific times rather than assuming they match the main gaming schedule.
The casino floor currently runs on this timetable:
| Day | Casino Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 10:00 am - 4:00 am |
| Tuesday | 10:00 am - 4:00 am |
| Wednesday | 10:00 am - 4:00 am |
| Thursday | 10:00 am - 4:00 am |
| Friday | 10:00 am - 6:00 am |
| Saturday | 10:00 am - 6:00 am |
| Sunday | 10:00 am - 4:00 am |
If you are travelling in mainly to register and sort your Crown Sydney Casino account, turning up mid-morning on a weekday is usually the cleanest option. Desk staff are typically less pressured at that time, and you are less likely to spend ages waiting around.
Opening a Deposit Account - A Separate Process
A Deposit Account sits alongside, but is not identical to, your Crown Rewards membership. It is a separate facility that allows you to keep funds with Crown for gaming purposes. You cannot open one until you already have access to the casino floor, and every part of the process has to be handled while you are physically at Crown Sydney.
First, make sure your Crown Rewards membership is fully active and casino floor access has been granted. Once that is sorted, go to the relevant cashier or accounts desk inside Crown Sydney.
You will be asked again for a valid physical photo ID. On top of that, you must provide your personal bank account details - and the account has to be in your own name, not in the name of someone else and not a joint account.
Crown may also ask for extra information to meet Australian Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing obligations. That is standard compliance across the industry, not a special rule that only applies to Crown.
You will then be given the Deposit Account Terms and Conditions to review and sign on-site. Take a moment to read through them properly before signing, as they define how your funds are handled.
Before you walk away, confirm clearly with the staff member that your Deposit Account is active and ready to use. After that point, every transaction on the Deposit Account requires you to show either your valid photo ID or your Crown Rewards Membership Card. That is every time, with no exceptions.
